The module may have no power or may have failed outright. Confirm the shutoff arm is down, the harness is seated, and the freezer is at 0–5°F. If all check out, the module is dead.

Not every ice problem is the ice maker's fault. Match your symptom below before you order anything — a $25 water inlet valve fixes more "dead" ice makers than a full replacement does.

Replace the unitYou hear the motor run, but the mold stays dry. That's the water path — a frozen fill tube or a failed water inlet valve at the back of the fridge, not the ice maker itself.
Check valve & fill tube firstLow water pressure or a partially clogged inlet valve/filter. The ice maker is doing its job with too little water. Replace the filter and test pressure before condemning the unit.
Check pressure & filterThe ejector motor or module gearing is wearing out. It will only get worse, and the internal motor costs nearly as much as a complete assembly.
Replace the unitSheets of ice or water in the bin mean the fill shutoff logic has failed, or the inlet valve no longer closes fully. Test the valve; if it's good, the module's fill control is gone.
Replace the unitIce makers last 5–10 years on average. Past that point, chasing individual components is false economy — and parts availability starts to dry up for older modules.
Replace the unitIf the failure is inside the assembly — motor module, mold thermostat, or ejector — replace the whole unit. Individual internals cost 60–90% of a complete assembly and require more disassembly to install. If the failure is in the water path — inlet valve, fill tube, filter — fix that part and keep your ice maker.

Order by model number, not brand. The full model number is on a sticker inside the fresh-food compartment — usually on a side wall or behind a crisper drawer. Search for the assembly using that number, e.g. WRS325SDHZ01 ice maker assembly. "Fits Whirlpool" is not a guarantee of fit; the model number is.
This is the standard procedure for modular freezer-mounted ice makers, the type in most top-freezer, side-by-side, and French-door refrigerators.
Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker, then close the water supply valve feeding the fridge (usually a saddle or quarter-turn valve under the sink or behind the unit).
Remove the ice bin and any shelf blocking the ice maker. Lay a towel below the assembly to catch drips and dropped screws.
Two or three 1/4" hex-head screws hold the unit to the freezer wall. Loosen the bottom screws, lift the unit off its keyhole slots, and support it — it's still wired in.
Press the locking tab on the connector and pull the plug body — never the wires. If it's stubborn, rock it gently side to side. The old unit is now free.
Compare old and new side by side. Some replacements ship without the fill cup, shutoff arm, or mounting bracket — move them over from the old unit before installing.
Plug the harness in until it clicks, hang the unit on its keyhole slots, and snug the screws. Confirm the fill cup lines up under the fill tube — misalignment here causes leaks.
Open the water valve, restore power, and lower the shutoff arm. The first harvest takes up to 24 hours as the mold reaches temperature. Discard the first two batches of ice.
The module swap is beginner-friendly. These three situations are not — they involve sealed refrigeration systems or plumbing work where a mistake gets expensive.
If the freezer can't hold 0–5°F, no ice maker will work. Warm freezers point to compressor, sealed-system, or defrost faults — refrigerant work is licensed-technician territory.
Standalone units (Scotsman, U-Line, KitchenAid built-ins) have their own compressors, condensers, and drain lines. They're small refrigeration plants, not modules — different diagnosis, different repair.
Corroded saddle valves, no shutoff at the fridge, or copper line damage mean plumbing work before any ice maker will run reliably. Get the supply line right first.
Five to ten years is typical, versus 12–15 for the refrigerator around it. Most refrigerators outlive at least one ice maker, which is exactly why manufacturers make them modular and easy to swap.
OEM guarantees fit and usually lasts longer; universal kits cost 30–50% less and fit most common mounting patterns. If your fridge is under ~7 years old, OEM is worth it. Either way, order against your full model number.
The mold has to reach roughly 15°F before the thermostat allows the first fill, and the first few cycles run slowly as the freezer recovers from the door being open during installation. Slow first ice is normal, not a defect.
If it's more than six months old, yes. A clogged filter restricts flow, which produces the hollow, undersized cubes that get new ice makers blamed unfairly. It's a two-minute job while the fridge is already unplugged.
Only when the failed part is outside the assembly — the inlet valve, fill tube, or filter. Internal components (motor module, thermostat, ejector) cost nearly as much as a complete unit and take longer to install, so the whole-assembly swap almost always wins.
Discard the first two or three batches — they flush manufacturing residue from the new mold and stale water from the line. If taste persists past that, replace the water filter and dump any old ice stored in the bin, which absorbs freezer odors.
